Quick Facts

Student Body: There are 650 children in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade.

Class Size: Our Kindergarten is comprised of five coed classrooms, with 15 - 16 students in each section. Each Kindergarten classroom is staffed with a teacher and an assistant teacher.  Beginning in first grade, children move into single sex classrooms, with four sections -- two for girls and two for boys -- at each grade level. 18 - 20 students are in each section.  First grade classrooms are staffed with a teacher and an assistant. Second grade classrooms are staffed with a teacher and a part-time assistant. Overall, the Schools have a student/teacher ratio of 8.5: 1.

Diversity: Our commitment to diversity is rooted in our foundress, St. Madeleine Sophie Barat's philosophy and Sacred Heart Schools' 200-year history of making education accessible to children of all backgrounds.  Grounded in the Goals and Criteria, we believe that a Sacred Heart education inspires all members of our community to cultivate an understanding and respect for a variety of cultures, perspectives, religions and life experiences.

Religion: 60 - 70% of our student body is Catholic.  30 - 40% of our students come from a wide variety of other faith backgrounds, both Christian and non-Christian.

Racial and Ethnic Diversity: Students of color make up approximately 20% of the student body. In addition, the Schools are enriched by the presence of families from many countries from around the world. Countries represented in 2005-06 academic year include Afghanistan, Albania, Bosnia, Canada, China, Colombia, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Iran, Japan, Korea, Liberia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Thailand, Tibet, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and Viet Nam.

Geographic Area Served: Students come from 36 zip codes throughout the Chicago area, ranging from Hyde Park in the south to Wilmette in the north. Approximately 40% of the student body comes from Lincoln Park and Lake View.

Uniforms: All students are required to wear uniforms. There are designated non-uniform days throughout the year. Uniform suppliers include CLOZ, Schoolbelles, Lands End and the Schools' Campus Bookstore.
