Important Facts and Information

“Responsibility, self-discipline, and personal growth
are emphasized at all levels.”

-- Mary Ann Ligon, Head of the Lower School

Facts and InformationSacred Heart is comprised of three small academic divisions— the Primary School (Kindergarten through second grade), the Lower School (third through fifth grade), and the Middle School (sixth through eighth grade).

Each division is led by a Division Head who works closely with each student and family.  The Division Heads report to the Principal, who directs the entire academic program and ensures the Schools’ academic resources are allocated strategically.  The Director of Schools provides leadership for the institution as whole and, along with the Board of Trustees, crafts the long-range vision for the Schools.

Our coed Kindergarten averages 14 - 16 children per class.  In first grade, children move into single sex classrooms, averaging 18 – 20 students.

Our 9 to 1 student to teacher ratio is among the best in Chicago.  Teaching assistants extend the work of the faculty throughout the Primary School.  An enrichment coordinator provides more intensive learning opportunities for children working ahead of the curriculum. Learning specialists support children who benefit from additional assistance.  Guidance counselors and a school nurse also are available to assist students and their families.

From the earliest grades, children study French, art, music, drama, technology, physical education, and religion in addition to our core curriculum of language arts, math, social studies, and science.  In sixth grade, children can choose to study Spanish.

Facts and Information

Sacred Heart’s high school placement counselor guides students and their families through each step of the secondary school admissions process. Emphasis is placed on helping students find the school that is the best fit for them. As a result, our students are regularly admitted to the area’s leading Catholic, independent, and Chicago public selective-enrollment high schools.

We value diversity in all its forms.  20% of our students are ethnically diverse; 6% come from countries other than the United States; 20% receive assistance from our financial aid program; 40% are not Catholic. Students come to Sacred Heart from more than 25 neighborhoods throughout the city and suburbs.
