Academics ~ Arts
Kindergarten
Kindergarten students are introduced to art appreciation through the art work of famous artists. A different artist is presented each month. Students learn about the artists' style and technique by recreating the art work from a selected art print. Multi media processes are explored including watercolor, tempera, chalk, and fabric. Art lessons are integrated across the curriculum where appropriate and may include seasonal topics.
Primary & Lower School Art (grades 1-5)
The lower school Visual Arts Program provides children with the opportunity for self-expression through visual communication. The Program encompasses experience in creative problem solving, critical thinking, and individual and cooperative learning situations. The exploration of art concepts through hands-on activities helps build confidence and self-esteem.
The art curriculum for grades 1-5 is arranged in sequence and advances from the simple to the complex. Each lesson is adaptable to the developmental level of the students. Thematic and interdisciplinary connections are made in all grades and students work with two and three-dimensional art forms.
Middle School Art
Students in grades 6-8 are enrolled in art for one semester each year, alternating with the performing arts program. The focus of the arts program is on the application of artistic skills and acquiring confidence. Students are exposed to a variety of artists and artistic styles.
Classes are structured to be manipulative, hands-on experiences which are accompanied by slide shows and discussions to address why individuals make art. Students are challenged to produce art using realism and abstraction while learning drawing and painting techniques, hand building methods used in ceramics and sculpture, and fiber/textile experiences.
The art work of every student is displayed throughout the school while specific works are chosen for additional display at the annual art show in May.
Permanent Art Collection
Sacred Heart has established a permanent collection of student art work which is professionally framed and displayed throughout the school. Each year, additional pieces are chosen from the lower and middle school student body to add to the permanent art collection . Students receive recognition for their contribution at the awards ceremony on Prize Day. Back to top
