As part of Sacred Hearts Schools' mission to educate the whole child, a love of music is cultivated in each student from the earliest school experience.
Creating music is the most significant component of Lower School music, with singing being at the center of every class. During their time in the Primary and the Lower School, the students will sing traditional children's songs, American folk music, world folk music, songs which relate to the core curriculum, and music for liturgy. Pitch matching and good vocal technique are taught as they are appropriate for each grade level. Performance opportunities, formal and informal, are welcomed as a chance to develop poise and confidence.
In addition to singing, the children play a variety of instruments in lower school music. In the beginning, simple rhythm instruments are used to develop a strong sense of beat. The children then progress to play more complex rhythm instruments, pitched rhythm instruments, handbells and finally the recorder. Music reading and basic theory are introduced in the third and fourth grade through instrumental music.
Middle School Music
In the middle school, the students continue their study of music theory with a focus on rhythmic and melodic notation. In addition to theory, each grade level explores the music of a different era of music history. Students learn about the events, inventions, and discoveries which influenced the lives and works of the great composers throughout history. The sixth grade studies the music of the Baroque Period, and composers such as Vivaldi, Handel, and Bach; the seventh grade studies the Classical and Romantic Eras, and the music of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Tchaikovsky, and the eighth grade focuses on the music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
Singing is the third component of the middle school music class. The emphasis is on breath control, proper enunciation, singing with expression, and stage presence. The students perform pieces from a wide variety of cultures, and they sing in many different languages.
