We recognize the importance of educating our children for the future according to the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools. To this end we shall act so that technology becomes part of Sacred Heart Schools' curriculum and infrastructure. Faculty, staff and, students are trained in the application of technology for the benefit of the Schools and the communities of interest. Technology at Sacred Heart Schools serves the following purposes:
PURPOSE
COMMUNITIES OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION
Teaching-Learning Process
Students, Faculty, Parents
Technology facilitates the flow of information between teachers and students, between administrators/ teachers and parents and among students within and outside the classroom. Consistent with approved content standards and benchmarks, technology is integrated into the curriculum and teaching practices within each subject area.
Self-Learning Process
Students
Technology supports students' researching, analyzing, investigating writing, computing (math-wise), etc. activities. These activities are typically performed outside of the immediate influence of a teacher such as when completing homework assignments at home or in the Library.
Administration and Management
Faculty, Staff, Parents, Alumni/ae, Board of Trustees
Technology enhances the end-user's efficiency in performing collaborative administrative and managerial duties and responsibilities as well as those duties and responsibilities not usually requiring simultaneous interaction with others. The results of which may be shared formally, informally, directly or indirectly with other constituents. An example of this purpose is the preparation of this document.
Separate Subject Area
Students, Faculty, Parents
Technology is the subject area. Computer and computer applications teachers teach and students learn and practice the skills necessary to competently use computers, software and peripheral devices at an age-appropriate level. Whenever possible this purpose incorporates purposes 1 & 2 (e.g., when a math-game application is used to develop keyboarding skills involving numbers). Computer and computer applications training is incorporated into faculty and staff profession development programs.
Department of Information Technology Mission, Goals and Objectives
The Schools' Department of Information Technology recognizes the need for accountability and responsiveness in the area of technical support. To that end, the Department has set forth the following mission, goals and objectives:
Department of Information Technology Mission
The mission of the Sacred Heart Schools Department of Information Technology is to develop and maintain computer networking systems that support the mission, goals, objectives and priorities of the Schools.
Department of Information Technology Goals
Superior level of proactive customer service
A highly integrated, stable, reliable and networked environment
Technological capabilities consistent with needs
Technologically aware end users
Technical invisibility
Department of Information Technology Objectives
100% of computers are on a common network; can access the Internet; and can print to at least two networked printers
Secure network operational 99% of productive hours
98% of individual computers operational each school day
98% of peripheral devices operational each school day
100% of end users have functional e-mail and can access their e-mail remotely
50% of users can simultaneously access the network remotely
A Technical Assistance, Repair, and Setup (TARS) average response time of less than two hours
Technology Resources
To accomplish the technology mission, goals and objectives, the Schools have approximately 290 wire-bound and wireless desktop and notebook/laptop Windows-based computers installed throughout the Schools, two mobile computer labs each comprising 20 wireless Windows-based tablet or laptop computers and 14 networked printers as well as numerous peripheral devices such as scanners and projectors. Our network topology is IP/IPX based. It comprises seven servers using the Windows 2000 and 2003 operating systems. The network branches from a server room located on the first floor to approximately 90 classrooms, offices and meeting spaces located on 15 floors throughout four buildings. The branches are provided service by a cascade of switches at termination points throughout the buildings, hence to end-users by connecting their PCs to routing devices. The Schools' computers access the Internet via a high-speed, broadband circuit (T1). All Internet traffic passes through a proxy server, filtering out offensive material.
