Coming Soon: Sales Tax Holiday on School Items
There will be a sales tax ‘holiday’ between August 6-15 for school items that cost under $100. Qualifying items include clothes, footwear (no sports or dance shoes), and school supplies (excluding arts, computer and electronic supplies).
You still pay a portion of county and city tax but no state tax, which means the City of Chicago sales tax rate will be 4.75 percent for clothes and school supplies during that time. The Illinois Department of Revenue has posted a detailed list of what qualifies during this 10-day period.
