The Catherine I. Seiker, RSCJ Award
Each year since 1997, the Catherine I. Seiker, RSCJ Award has been given to a member of the Sheridan Road community who has shown outstanding dedication and service to Sacred Heart Schools.
2015 Recipient - Dan Flaherty, former Head of Sacred Heart Middle School
The Sheridan Road Alumni Association has named Dan Flaherty, former Head of the Middle School, the 2015 Catherine I. Seiker Award recipient. Flaherty will accept the honor during Alumni Weekend, October 16-17.
Flaherty began his 18-year tenure at Sacred Heart in 1988 as the Hardey Dean of Students. Over the years, he also coached basketball and football and taught various classes, while his position evolved from Assistant Head of Hardey and Dean (1995) to Dean of Discipline (1998), Dean of SHS (1999) and Head of the Middle School (2000). Currently, Flaherty is the Principal at St. Pius X Parish School in Lombard, IL, a position he has held since retiring from Sacred Heart in 2006.
Flaherty is remembered as a figure of fairness, compassionate justice and stern discipline, mixed with a dash of Irish humor. In 2006, he said that his favorite memories of Sacred Heart were of “kids performing acts of incredible kindness for one another." He gave broad credit to the Schools for shaping him personally and professionally: “Sacred Heart didn’t just influence me; it formed me. I will always consider myself a child of the Sacred Heart.”
Sacred Heart is honored to welcome Flaherty back home to Sheridan Road in October.

Sr. Seiker has had a long affiliation with and affection for Sheridan Road. Her relationship with the Schools began in 1945 when she was sent to teach at Hardey Preparatory School for Boys and the Academy of the Sacred Heart’s elementary school. In later years, she served as the Business Manager and directed volunteers. During the 1980’s, Sr. Seiker embarked upon the massive task of organizing the Schools’ archives and guiding the Alumni Association through a period of critical transition. She worked tirelessly from handwritten records to produce an Alumni directory. She currently lives at Oakwood Convent of the Sacred Heart in Atherton, California, and is well known for the interest she continues to take and the phone calls she continues to make to alumni around the country.
The Sheridan Road Alumni Association Board President presents the award to the winner at the annual Alumni Luncheon.
