Michael Doody H’76 passed away April 11, 2014.
Sacred Heart Schools’ communications office was surprised and grateful when Hardey Prep alumnus, Michael Doody H’76, called one day out of the blue with an offer to design, maintain and host the SHS website for free. The Schools soon came to find out that this level of generosity was not unusual behavior for Mike – he hosted the site for five years.
When asked why he did so, he simply said in a 2004 article for Heartbeat that he wanted to give back to the community that gave him so much.
“The school needed a first class website, and I think I was always meant to help. It’s been one of the best decisions I made to give back to the school and represent the Class of ’76.”
In 2005 student philanthropist, Brittany Bosca A’10, liked the SHS website and reached out to Mike for help with her fundraising efforts. He created a website to accept online donations and since its inception donations to Brittany’s Burn Camp Benefit have doubled. Mike later said that this kind of community involvement is “what being at a school like Sacred Heart is all about.”
Mike credited who he was, in part, to his early years at Sacred Heart Schools. “I learned how to shake hands, walk into a room with confidence and strive to make good decisions. We were taught by some great teachers who cared for us well beyond the classroom.”
After graduating from Sacred Heart Schools, Mike went on to Loyola Academy and from there, Drake University. While at Drake University Mike joined Phi Delta Theta fraternity, an organization based on similar standards expected of Hardey gentlemen: friendship, a high degree of mental culture and a high standard of morality. All three of which he embodied throughout his life.
Upon graduating from Drake University Mike worked in management and in 1995, while still Director of Catering at Merchandise Mart, he founded Internet marketing company PageArts Development. He was able to take on PageArts full time in 1997 and once said, “It’s been a great ride ever since.”
Sadly Mike passed away from complications following a stroke on Friday, April 11, 2014. A Memorial Mass in Mike’s name will be celebrated on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Loyola Academy in Wilmette. He leaves behind his parents, brother, nephew, aunts and uncle, many friends and his beloved dog, Indy. Mike will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
