Classroom Curriculum
100% of students in preschool through 8th grade engage in music instructions as part of their required curriculum.
Middle School
Middle School Music Teacher: Cheri Dahlen
The music program nurtures the natural creative impulse in each child through a wide range of vocal and instrumental activities. Students in Middle School continue building on six years of prior exposure studying the basics of music. This includes performance, theory, composition, improvisation, history, and cultural relevance in an effort to create interest and develop lifelong music appreciation. Students also learn about improvisation and composition, and are introduced to the role that music has played throughout history, influencing society and culture. They engage in learning the music of specific cultures and historical periods as well as explore those given cultures and time periods and where music has intersected.
Lower School
Lower School Music Teacher: Laura Becker
The music program nurtures the natural creative impulse in each child through a wide range of vocal and instrumental activities. In Lower School, daily singing creates opportunities to advance each student’s ability to match pitch, sing with good vowel formation, and to sing in parts. Over three years, the student’s repertoire will grow to include liturgical songs, folk songs and popular music. Additionally, the students will be introduced to instrumental music through instruction on hand bells, recorders and ukuleles.
Primary School
Primary School Music Teacher: Tim Mikolay
The music program nurtures the natural creative impulse in each child through a wide range of vocal and instrumental activities. In Primary School, students are introduced to the basics of music. Singing is an integral part of every class. Students are introduced to pitch matching and proper breathing. Instrumental instruction begins with performing on pitched and un-pitched percussion instruments using simple rhythm patterns. Active listening to music is practiced regularly.
