Living Goal IV: Beyond Sheridan Road

Image

From their first months in Kindergarten, Sacred Heart students learn about community service and what it means to be part of a community. During their time on Sheridan Road, students participate in a variety of community service activities that open their eyes to giving back to their community. This year, Sacred Heart Schools is focusing on Goal IV: Schools of the Sacred Heart commit themselves to educate to the building of community as a Christian value.

But what happens when students graduate from Sacred Heart? Turns out, a lot.

Many local high school alums have not only continued the community service projects that they began at Sacred Heart, but have grown and expanded what they are doing – independent of high school requirements or parental pressure.

While nearly every local high school requires students to fulfill a certain number of community service hours, this obligation has never been an issue for Katherine Bettuzzi A'15. She states that Sacred Heart exposed her to "what service is and how to solve problems," from Free Dress Day dollars to working with Misericordia residents. She credits Sacred Heart with helping her to "be outspoken and involved - and excited to work with other populations." Today, Katherine is part of the Woodlands Global Scholars program, in which she participates in service to the global community.

Likewise, classmate Annika Swanson A'16 credits her Sacred Heart teacher, Mrs. Beale-DelVecchio, with "showing her the rest of the world." She developed an interest in both water and environmental conservation and brought this passion to high school. She will be taking a trip to study water conservation this summer.

A number of Sacred Heart graduates - Peyton Hopp A'17, Kate Beck A'16, and Ava Taylor A'16, to name a few - took a special interest in their community service days at Misericordia and chose to join the Junior Board of Misericordia. As a member of the Junior Board, students participate in multiple events throughout the year, including the annual Holiday Party, the St. Patrick's Day Outreach Party, the Spring Shuffle, and of course Misericordia Candy Days, in which the volunteers pass out jelly beans for cash donations. Kate states that Sacred Heart taught her social justice, and the difference between identifying a problem and actually finding a solution to a problem.

Rob Lynch H'16, a junior at Latin School of Chicago, states that Sacred Heart provided him with "a feeling of how important community is." At Latin, Rob went beyond his community service requirements; he and a friend started a chapter of Face the Future Foundation – an organization that provides access to direct healthcare services to disadvantaged or under served children who need treatment for craniofacial differences.  Rob helps to organize volunteers to participate in various events - informal ones such as obstacle courses with the kids, as well as an annual holiday celebration that brings together kids, their families, and the numerous Face the Future volunteers. Rob spends his spare time at Latin recruiting friends and classmates to volunteer - a wonderful example of Sacred Heart Goal IV!

No matter the venue, Sacred Heart alums have discovered the joy and reward of participating and becoming leaders in community service. We are proud of their ongoing commitments and enthusiasm as they strive to make the world – and their communities – a better place.

Alumni Concert

On December 19, alumni gathered in the Chapel for the second annual Alumni Concert. Along with the Glee Club, alumni performers belted out some of their favorite tunes, as well as holiday classics. One highlight featured Declan Beyer H'16 and his jazz band from Chicago Academy of the Arts. A huge thanks to Justin Nixon, our esteemed Fine Arts Director, for once again recruiting these alums and inspiring them to make great music!
