Sacred Heart's Parent Education Program "Raising Our Children Sanely in a Challenging World" Nancy C. Kehoe, RSCJ, PhD
November 13, 2019 7-8:30 pm Sacred Heart Schools' Chapel 6250 N. Sheridan Rd.
"Wherever two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them." This familiar Scripture quote is a reminder of God's presence among and with us but in today's world we might reframe the quote to read: "Wherever two or three parents are gathered, the conversation may involve the stress of raising children in today's world." In this presentation, Sr. Kehoe will explore some of the reasons for this, some of the pressures children deal with daily and offer some thoughts on ways that parents might mitigate some of the stress. Given the increased rates of anxiety, panic disorders, and depression among elementary school children, this is a topic to address together as a community. The Scripture quote has relevance because knowing that God is in our midst gives us hope and resilience to face the daunting task of raising children in today's challenging world.
Sr. Kehoe graduated from the Convent of the Sacred Heart Sheridan Road in 1955 and in 1956 entered the Society of the Sacred Heart. After teaching for 10 years at both Woodlands Academy and the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Cincinnati, she went to Boston to study for her doctorate in Psychology. She completed a postdoctoral internship at one of Harvard's teaching hospitals and then had a private practice for 23 years. During that time, she began facilitating groups on spirituality with adults who suffer with serious mental illness in psychiatric day treatment programs – pioneer work at that time. For 20 years she has worked with Harvard medical students. In 2009 her book, "Wresting with Our Inner Angels: Faith, Mental Illness and the Journey to Wholeness" was published and in 2018 she received Sheridan Road's Sr. Carol Haggarty, RSCJ Leadership Award. Sr. Kehoe currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Woodlands Academy, Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart and Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart. |
