The commitment to faith, intellect, service, community, and personal growth forms the backbone of every community member's experience on Sacred Heart-Sheridan Road. The five Goals and Criteria are the guiding principles of each Network Sacred Heart school, and their implementation engenders a great deal of thought, conversation and creativity.
When alumna and recipient of the 2020 Goal Award, Lisa Damour, PhD, who is a noted psychologist, author, and regular New York Times' columnist, spoke recently to a small group of parents about living the Goals, there was both intense interest and smiles of recognition. No one there doubted the benefits of teaching the Goals, but the fact that so much research supports them and their aptness during the chronically stressful pandemic, was illuminating.
Life, of course, is filled with a variety of stressors that can invite growth. But chronic stress differs in that it is unrelenting, and Dr. Damour focused on how the Goals can buffer children from the effects of constant stress and guide them no matter what life holds.
Goal I: A personal and active faith in God
"Ordinary Magic": Goals II-V Dr. Damour says that psychologists have looked at children facing chronically stressful conditions such as poverty and maltreatment and found that some were not only intact, but they were doing well. They are the recipients of what is called, poetically, "ordinary magic." These are protective processes that buffer children against what is going on around them, and the remaining four Goals can be seen through that lens.
Goal II: Deep respect for intellectual values Having a sense of autonomy, control, and feeling that growth is taking place can help children get through times of chronic stress. Dr. Damour says that it is a rare achievement that Sacred Heart has had students at school for all but two weeks of this academic year. The students are learning, whether on campus or remotely, and they are losing themselves in knowledge, stories and math equations. That is not only useful in exploring academic scholarship, but it helps them get through hard times. Intellectual life can be a buffer against chaos.
Goal III: A social awareness which impels to action
Goal IV: The building of community as a Christian value
Goal V: Personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom
Dr. Damour says that the five Goals are an incredible roadmap for weathering this particular crisis. But they also help to guide children and young people throughout the course of their life. Alums often talk about the impact the Goals had on them, and our entire adult community seeks to model them. You can read more about the Goals and Criteria by clicking here.
