The Importance of Spiritual Development

Columbia University psychologist Lisa Miller, in an exhaustive review of psychological and neurological research, found that children raised with a well-developed spiritual life are happier, more optimistic, more flexible, and better prepared to face life’s challenges. 

Children have an instinctive sense of spirituality, and they approach the world with curiosity and questions. Parents can do several things to help children develop a relationship with God. 

  • Listen and don't be afraid to admit that you don't have all the answers!
  • Share what you have found to be true
  • Create opportunities for sharing, silence or reflection as a family
  • Learn about your faith tradition as well as other faiths
  • Model the Golden Rule
